The spill occurred at South Division High School in Milwaukee when the school's engineer accidentally spilled a mixture of chlorine, muriatic acid and water.

The engineer was taken to St. Luke's Medical Center.

Principal Donald Krueger said the students were evacuated to nearby elementary and middle schools.

Krueger said that the spill occurred in the basement of the building beneat the swimming pool, and that the engineer was likely preparing to chlorinate the pool.

"He got a pretty good dose of it in his lungs," Krueger said.

The principal also inhaled the fumes when he responded to the engineer's call and said he probably would seek medical treatment this afternoon.
