Sam Rayburn High School (Pasadena, Texas) students and faculty were evacuated Thursday (1/6/2000) afternoon after a gas leak was detected.

Mark Kramer, a spokesman for the Pasadena school district, said a construction crew working near Rayburn hit a gas line, and the escaping gas drifted toward the school.

The 2,800 students and faculty were bused to the district's field house as a precaution about 1:45 p.m., Kramer said. No health problems were reported.

Alicia Dixon, a spokeswoman for Entex, said the gas-line rupture happened at 2304 Wichita. Company crews deemed the area safe shortly before 4 p.m., allowing the evacuees to return for their belongings and vehicles.
