An ammonia leak at a high school in central Quebec sent about 60 teenaged students and a few of their teachers to hospital Friday.

About 1,000 students were escorted from the building and several were given oxygen before being transported to hospitals.

Some students began experiencing scratchy throats, headaches and nausea. Evacuated students who suffered no symptoms Friday stayed in the local hockey arena across the street from the school for about four hours.

Provincial environment officials flushed the schools' ventilation system and traced the problem to an ammonia leak by early Friday evening, said Pierre Hebert, Grand Mere fire chief. But the origin of the leak was not immediately known.
